PAINTING FOR BANGLADESH

Bangladesh The following little paintings were my contribution to "Painting for Bangladesh", an international art project run locally by Deedee Recter to help raise money for the education of some of the most underprivileged children of Bangladesh.

The original motifs you see in these little paintings were painted by the bangladeshi children. Their theme was "What is Happiness?" and so as you can imagine, many painted a home, a house and a garden- things we in developed countries often take way too granted.

ENCOUNTERS

Encounters These little paintings all have one thing in common; they are about encounters with someone very special. As we know, love usually waits for us in the most unexpected of places, be it in a teashop in Cornwall, on Waterloo bridge, in the cold autumn rain, in the narrow streets of Shanghai’s old town or simply in transit at the airport.

HAIKU

Haiku The following black and white illustrations were created in the simple Japanese haiku spirit to accompany Riitta Rossilahti’s beautiful haiku and tanka poems in “My Green Cape/Vihreä Viittani” (ISBN: 978-952-92-6558-9).

SEASONS

Seasons It is a rare talent to be able to capture the essence of a moment in a simple haiku. Riitta Rossilahti’s delicate haikus on Finnish nature inspired me to these little “haiku paintings”.

BORNEO

Borneo It all began in the summer of 2008 while volunteering for the world’s largest primate rescue project, BOS (Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation), in the heart of Borneo’s rapidly disappearing rainforests. The immense ecological destruction and its disastrous impact on the locals, the ecosystem and on global warming, caused me to take a new turn and begin to use visual arts for addressing these issues. The series on the following pages are the result of a one year long collaboration with the students of Munich International School, Germany. The works voice the concerns and hopes of hundreds of students from across the world that have been brought together and transformed into playful, bold series. The series deal with the effects of deforestation and are a subtle plea for help to save the remaining pockets of paradise. Furthermore they are an appeal to us all to start taking action for a more sustainable, new Earth.

FENG-SHUI

Feng-Shui Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese philosophy used to enhance the energy flow and harmony of our living environment. Fascinated by this ancient teaching and wanting to give the spectator a sense of energy and tranquility, I began to study the symbolism, colors and energy flows associated with this philosophy. The following pages are the result of over a decade of experimenting with Feng Shui in visual arts.
